Dr Z was founded in 1988 by Mike Zaite who grew up working with vacuum tubes and electronics and is currently based in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1990 he provided Joe Walsh (Eagles) with a Dr. Z SRZ-65 amplifier and in 1994 several more were commissioned for the 1994 Eagles Worlds Tour, at which point he quit his job as a Medical Electronic Technician to focus on producing his amplifiers. The following year, 'Guitar Player' magazine boosted the company's profile with a very positive review and gained him traction in the boutique amplifier market.
