Nylon String vs Steel String:
On an acoustic guitar, there are two types of strings - nylon and steel. A nylon string guitar is usually recommended by teachers for beginners, as the strings are softer on fingers just starting out. Eventually students can progress to a steel string guitar as they build up the finger strength.
Solid Top vs Laminate Top:
This one applies to Acoustic Guitars! A guitar with a solid top means the part of the guitar that faces outward towards the strings (the top) is made from 1 single solid piece of timber, while a laminate top is made from manufactured timber. A solid top will produce a bit more volume and have a more rounded tone which will also improve with age. The advantage of a laminate top however is it can be a more cost effective option.
Tuner:
A guitar needs to be tuned regularly so an essential accessory is a guitar tuner. This is an electronic device that tells you if the string is either below or above the pitch that it should be, allowing the guitar to be tuned accordingly.
